Forest School Taster Days
Each half term we hold a taster day at our wood near Macclesfield. This day is designed to give a good introduction to the ethos of forest school, how it has developed since being in the UK, and how the pedagogy and skills can work within a woodland setting. We explore the key suppositions of forest school and discuss the intended outcomes in a very hands on way.
These are thought provoking, fun and creative sessions with a lot of practical activities to explore, discuss and reflect on. Guidance is given on where to go for further training.
The days which run from 9.30 to 3.30 include a campfire lunch and hot drinks throughout the day.
INSET training: How to take the curriculum outside!
We come to your setting, or you come to our wood…
Our INSET days are very much designed around what you want to achieve: maybe how to take maths outdoors, how to take phonics outside, how best to use your grounds for outdoor learning, for any subject. We have worked with a large number of schools exploring ways of giving confidence to teachers to take the learning out of the classroom and into the school grounds and beyond.
Some recent training sessions (including twilight sessions) have included:
- Sticks and Stones: outdoor numeracy using natural resources
- Insects: not just bug houses and magnifying glasses
- Role play and traditional tales out doors
- Building emotional intelligence by learning outdoors
- Mud is good: you can learn alot through mud
- If you can learn it indoors, you can learn it outdoors: you set the challenge.
- Taking KS1 and KS2 History into the open air
- Magic String and the learning it brings
We deliver sessions which are stimulating, non threatening, but challenging…and fun. It’s important to us that a day spent training, is a pleasurable one for everyone. We are very happy to speak with you and develop a specific training session for all staff. Please email or telephone for details.
Student Teacher Outdoor Learning Days
We work with a number of colleges and Universities, supporting student teachers and early years educators by introducing outdoor play and learning in the woodland environment. We can take student groups up to 30, and a typical day might inclde the following:
- The ethos of pedagogy of forest school
- Benefits v risks of outdoor activities
- Creative play ideas for all ages
- Curriculum adaptation outdoors
- Supporting well being outdoors
These days are designed to be a really experiential learning day with lots of space for discussion, idea development and reflection…and include a campfire lunch and hot drinks throughout the day.
We have been running a home education forest school group, fortnightly, from our wood near Macclefield, Cheshire, since spring 2011. This is well attended and continues to grow providing wonderful opportunities, not just for learning, but also a lovely environment to meet and share with other home educated children.
We also hold workshops for parents who are home educators: sharing ideas for learning outside, and assisting in the development of your own programmes of work whilst making the most out of the outdoors.
